NYU-Poly alone at the top!

Jays defeat Sage to take over sole possesion of 1st place

Brooklyn, NY - In an all-important Skyline Conference tri-match with Mount Saint Mary's (MSM) and Sage Colleges, NYU-Poly had something to play for: 1st place and the inside track to host the Skyline Championships.  Consider both accomplished, as the Jays downed a stubborn Blue Knights team, before defeating Sage for the first-time ever.

Coming in at 4-0 in conference play the Fighting Blue Jays had a determined first opponent in the Blue Knights. Mount Saint Mary took advantage of NYU-Poly's slow start and won the opening game 25-22. NYU-Poly then dug in their heels and started to play their usual, hard-hitting volleyball. Led by Meredith Shipman (Sugarland, TX / Elkins HS) and Victoria Kalvert (Missouri City, TX / Elkins HS) with 19 and 14 kills respectively and with 39 assists from freshman Nicole Breitbart (Ridgewood, NJ / Ridgewood HS), NYU-Poly quickly got back on track and won the next three games 25-16, 25-21 and 26-24 to win the match 3-1.

The second match saw perennial Skyline favorite Sage coming in tied with NYU-Poly for the Skyline lead also at 5-0. In three years, Sage had yet to lose a Skyline  Conference match. In the first two games the Jays came out pounding the ball and overpowered Sage 25-12 and 25-12. Sage battled back in an exciting third game winning 25-21, but in the fourth NYU-Poly reasserted themselves and posted a 25-20 win to win the match 3-1 and remain undefeated in conference play, taking sole possession of first place.

NYU-Poly will host Steven's Institute of Technology tonight at 7:00pm in a non-conference matchup of regional contenders.
