Now Arriving: A New Theory of In-Flight Turbulence

Physicists Bjorn Birnir and Luiza Angheluta-Bauer developed an advanced model of turbulent motion that could help engineers improve airplane design and meteorological forecasting, potentially making air travel safer as severe turbulence over the North Atlantic has increased 55 percent since 1979. Katepalli Sreenivasan, Dean Emeritus of NYU Tandon, said "the result is novel, there is no doubt about that," while acknowledging some experts disagreed with his assessment.
