Nine in a row
NYU-Poly holds off pesky USMMA squad
Brooklyn, NY - For the US Merchant Marine Academy, it must have seemed like they were playing against an unsinkinable ship. Every time the Lady Mariners would fire off a few rockets (kills), the Lady Blue Jays took the hits and kept on coming, firing back some volleys of their own and eventually downing USMMA 3-0 Monday night.
The Jays have been dominating their opponents during their nine game winning streak, winning the last 22 sets. The last set NYU-Poly lost was the fourth set in a 3-1 victory over William Patterson on Sept. 19.
Junior Meredith Shipman led NYU-Poly with 13 kills against USMMA, while sophomore Victoria Kalvert added eight, including a game-winning throw down in the second set (26-24). NYU-Poly had 10 service aces, paced by freshmen Corey Loupee. The Jays had an impressive 49 digs in the match, with senior Jackie Johnson providing 16, while sophmore Melissa Pona added 12.
The Jays look to make it 10 straight with a non-conference, home match against City Tech Thursday. NYU-Poly is 3-0 at home.
