Gabor Named to Skyline 1st-Team; Rohr and Turgut Earn 2nd-Team Nods

Clifton Park, NY - In an acknowledgment of the outstanding season the men's soccer team had in 2009, the Skyline Conference coaches selected three Jays as All-Conference players. Sophomore Joe Gabor (Warwick, NY / Warwick HS) was selected to the first-team on defense. He becomes the first NYU-Poly men's soccer player to receive a first-team nod. Freshmen center-mid Allen Rohr (Northridge, CA / Granada Hills Charter) was selected to the 2nd team, along with senior forward Volkan Turgut (Rochester, NY / Bishop Kearney).
Gabor, a captain, anchored a defense that improved from 50 goals allowed in 2008 to 36 this season. He was instrumental in the team posting six shutouts and holding their opponents to just over 1.5 goals per contest. He was second on the team in points (9) and tied for first in goals (4).
Rohr, who started all 21 games for the Jays, led the team and finished tied for eighth in the conference in assists (5), two of which were game winners. He also recorded the game winning goal against Berkeley College. Rohr also drew the game-winning PK in the conference quarterfinals against Maritime.
Turgut finished tied for first in goals scored (4) on the team and was ninth in the conference for points (in conference games ) with eight. He ended up tied for fifth in goals scored in conference games with four.
Kalin, who finished his third season as head coach, was selected as the Coach of the Year. After being picked ninth in the Skyline Conference preseason poll, NYU-Poly finished in fourth place, earning the school’s first postseason tournament berth. The Fighting Blue Jays made the most of their opportunity with a 1-0 win over SUNY Maritime in the quarterfinals of the Skyline tournament. NYU-Poly recorded one of the top turnarounds in Division III this season. After going 2-13-4 in 2008, NYU-Poly went 10-10-1 this season with a roster consisting of primarily freshmen and sophomores.
