Far more than just a tool: How AI can be used responsibly
Associate Professor Julia Stoyanovich, director of NYU Tandon’s Center for Responsible AI, argues that AI has evolved from niche technology to general-purpose social infrastructure requiring public literacy and participatory governance. "We need guardrails that are both legal and lived," Stoyanovich wrote. She emphasizes that responsible AI requires human readiness, rigorous evaluation, and impact assessments, noting "the real question is not 'Can AI do it?' but 'How should we do it — together with AI?'"
