The engineers: Exploring the human

On a televised panel about biomedical engineering, Assistant Professor Khalil Ramadi discussed his ingestible electronics that target the brain. Ramadi created a capsule-sized pill called FLASH containing electrodes that stimulate the gut's neural network. "The gut is known in our field as the ‘little brain,’" he explained, noting it has the body's second-largest neural network. His device manipulates hormones like ghrelin to potentially treat obesity, diabetes, and eating disorders.
