Disney World solved a problem that could save America billions every year
Professor Debra Laefer said shared underground utility tunnels, like the “utilidors” beneath Disney World, cost more to build up front but would pay off over time on streets that cities dig up again and again. “There are streets in New York City that have been excavated at least once a year, every year for the past 30 years,” Laefer said. She previously led a $1.2 million National Science Foundation pilot to 3D-map New York City’s underground utilities, which the city has since built into a citywide effort.
