Cabrini blanks NYU-Poly in season opener
Radnor, PA - The NYU-Poly mens soccer team came out strong in its first contest of the 2009 season, playing even up with Cabrini College for the first 20 minutes of the match. But, last year's Colonial States Athletic Conference champions and 2009 NCAA postseason qualifier proved to be too much in the end, as they picked up a 5-0 win over the Jays.
However, NYU-Poly was an inch away from taking the lead in the 12th minute when sophomore Joe Gabor (Warwick, NY / Warwick HS) ripped a shot from the right side of the box. His shot was tipped by the Cavaliers keeper Bryan Johnson, hit the far post and rebound across the goal mouth. Nine minutes later, Cabrini capitalized when Andrew Jacobs, who appeared offsides, finished off a cross from Brian Raffle. In the 28th minute, Jacobs then set up Ryan Jurhing to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Fighting Blue Jays came out energized in the 2nd half, creating several opportunities, but none proved dangerous enough for Cabrini's Johnson. In the 55th minute Jacobs notched his second assist, hitting Brian Moran on a corner kick. The Cavaliers picked up a pair of late goals by Raffle and Justin McCall.
Cabrini outshot Poly 28-6 and led in corner kicks 8-4. Freshmen keeper Uriel Moreira (West Palm Beach, FL / Forrestt Hill HS) made 10 saves in his first collegiate start. Johnson and Mike Viscariello split the victory for Cabrini with the later making one save. NYU-Poly will play Frostburg State from Maryland at 3:00 PM on Saturday. Frostburg lost to Alvernia 2-0.
