AI-drafted patient portal messages save 7% on response times


NYU Tandon research found that AI-drafted patient portal messages reduced clinician response times by about 20 seconds per message. However, the study cautioned that efficiency gains may be offset by the cognitive burden of reviewing drafts. Professor Oded Nov emphasized the technology's learning curve: "Large language models are a new technology that can help providers be more responsive, more effective and more efficient in their communication with their patients. The more we understand who uses it and why, the better we can leverage it."
