#7 Brooklyn Upends #2 NYU-Poly in ECAC Action
Lady Jays Fall 64-54 in Quarterfinals
BROOKLYN, NY - A 21-0 Brooklyn College run over a nine minute span in the first half proved to be too much for the NYU-Poly Women's Basketball team to overcome. Despite winning the second half 37-35, the Lady Jays fell to the Lady Bulldogs 64-54 in the Quarterfinals of the ECAC Metro Region Tournament Wednesday night in the Jacobs Gymnasium. The Bulldogs, the #7 seed, were edged by the #2 seed NYU-Poly in regular season action, losing by one at their home court.
The Lady Jays started off solid, building a 14-8 lead with 11:53 to go in the first half. But, Brooklyn went on a game-changing 21-0 run, spurred by Amber Gordon's two three-pointers. But, the damage was spread out as seven different Bulldogs scored during the run.
Senior Kristin Leitheuser (Pleasant Valley, NY) rounded out her stellar career with a 15 point, nine rebound performance to lead the Lady Jays. Sophomore Shelby Bruns (Elko, NV) added 14 points while junior Margaux Pickell (Howell, NJ) ended with her 22nd double-double of the year, recording 10 points and 11 boards.
NYU-Poly made it exciting with 8:41 to play when a pair of Bruns free throws narrowed the Brooklyn lead to 46-42. But, another run, this time 11-2, sealed the victory for Brooklyn.
NYU-Poly shot just 21% from the field in the first half, which proved to be its demise, as Brooklyn shot 36%. The Lady Jays were outrebounded 41-34 and committed 20 turnovers to Brooklyn's 15. Brooklyn advances to play the winner of Lehman College and Farmingdale State on Saturday.
