Zhaoxi Zhang, PhD, joined the Center for Urban Science + Progress at NYU Tandon as a faculty fellow in 2023. Previously, she completed her PhD project ‘Urban Health Sensing’ in Aarhus University, Denmark and joined the United Nations Internship Program at UN-Habitat, Nairobi office, working on global urban health strategies.

Her long-term research goal is to pioneer data-driven initiatives for a healthy, sustainable and smart urban future at different urban scales. Faced with the challenge of urban planning and design in multiple domains (health, public space, and climate change), she is committed to leveraging interdisciplinary knowledge and cutting-edge tools to build capacity for the socio-technical transformation of urban development in the near future, enhancing urban resilience and improving human well-being. Her current research projects focus on innovations for human-environment interaction, such as sensor-supported monitoring of urban stress, AI chatbots for public participation, and VR-enhanced disaster preparedness. Her work has been recognized through publications in leading journals and featured in Data for Good Science.
