Tom Kirchner

Thomas R. Kirchner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at NYU’s School of Global Public Health, and affiliated faculty at CUSP.  Dr. Kirchner is the founding director of the NYU mobile health (“mHealth”) research initiative.  Dr. Kirchner is a clinical-health psychologist and methodologist interested in novel
methodologies that link individual behavior to the real-time context in which it occurs.  At CUSP, Dr. Kirchner actively engages and mentors students, collaborates on research projects and contributes to the broader intellectual community, enriching the study of urban science from a global health perspective.

Dr. Kirchner has partnered with CUSP faculty and students on a number of transdisciplinary projects, including a competitively awarded seed-grant from the Moore-Sloan Center for Data Science that supported a CUSP Capstone projects involving 8 masters students between 2017-2019. In 2020 Drs. Kirchner and Laefer (MPIs) were awarded an
National Science Foundation RAPID grant award for COVID19 field surveillance work. Ongoing NIH funded work focuses on the way health behaviors are influenced by socio-contextual factors, as well as the public health ramifications of the emerging vape device landscape, marijuana legalization, decriminalization and medicalization.

Dr. Kirchner earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical and Biological/Health Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh.
