"A Foundation Model for the electric grid (GridFM)"

Abstract

Foundation models, pre-trained on large datasets and adapted to a broad set of applications, are revolutionizing the field of artificial intelligence (AI). In this presentation, we will introduce a (non-text) based Foundation Model for the electric grid (GridFM), which was pre-trained on power flow data for multiple grid topologies and 100,000s of load scenarios. It will be shown that GridFM can be quickly finetuned to new unseen topologies with little training data, can handle topology changes for a given grid while accelerating power flow calculations by 3-4 orders of magnitudes at comparable accuracy.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Hendrik F. Hamann is a scientist and innovator whose research work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence and physics. He is a recent Professor for Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University and a Chief AI Scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory for the Director’s Office seeking to apply AI for accelerated scientific discovery. He is also the founder of GridFM.org

Before joining Brookhaven and Stony Brook, Dr. Hamann spent more than two decades at IBM Research, most recently as the Chief Science Officer for IBM Research at the T.J. Watson Research Center. At IBM he helped launch a new generation of AI foundation models—massive, physics-informed systems that can learn from and emulate the complexity of natural and engineered environments. His work helped create the first geospatial foundation models for global weather and Earth observations, and he now spearheads the world’s first AI foundation model for the electric grid, designed to improve resilience and accelerate the transition to renewable energy.

Dr. Hamann, a Fellow of the American Physical Society, has authored over 260 scientific papers and holds more than 180 patents. His contributions have earned him major honors, including the American Institute of Physics Prize for Industrial Applications of Physics and the Cozzarelli Prize of the National Academy of Sciences.
