NYU Tandon's Commencement Speaker:
Dede Thompson Bartlett
A former officer and senior executive with two Fortune 25 companies, Ms. Bartlett has mentored thousands of students, not only at NYU Tandon, but also as a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow at colleges and universities around the country. She co-chairs the Jim and Dede Bartlett Foundation, where she has established hundreds of summer internships at NYU Tandon and other schools and has made it her mission to attract women to careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.
In addition to education, Ms. Bartlett is passionate about empowering women and raising awareness about domestic violence. For these efforts, she has been honored by the International Women’s Forum, which gave her its Woman Who Makes a Difference Award; the Domestic Violence Crisis Center; Lifetime Television; the National Center for Victims of Crime; and the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
The author of a three-volume family history entitled, “Discovering My Lost Family: The Unexpected Journey of an American Woman,” Ms. Bartlett has deep roots at NYU. After graduating from Vassar College with honors, she received a Master’s Degree from NYU’s School of Education. Her mother, Emilie Thompson, graduated from NYU at the age of 45 after attending classes at night for eight years. Her father, George Juul Thompson, graduated from the School of Engineering in 1930 and returned to teach here from 1948 to 1968.
