Commencement 2020 is open to all September 2019 and January 2020 graduates and May 2020 candidates only. Students must first apply for their degree through the Registrar's Office. The Registrar's Spring 2020 degree application deadline is February 23, 2020.

Dean’s Exceptions: Candidates for graduation who have up to two outstanding courses required to complete their degree may petition their school’s Dean for eligibility to participate in Commencement. All outstanding courses must be completed by the end of the summer immediately following graduation. Students with extenuating circumstances (for example, international students whose visas expire or who are subject to travel restrictions) will have their situations reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Students must apply by Tuesday, April 7 and will be notified if they have been approved or declined prior to the attire ordering deadline (April 14, 2020). To request an exception, please fill out the Dean’s Exception Form

Please note: CUSP students should contact Sattik Deb (sd144@nyu.edu) to apply for a Dean's Exception.

      Commencement FAQ

How many tickets do I receive for Commencement?

When you register online, you may request a maximum of three (3) guest tickets for the Commencement ceremony at Yankee Stadium up to five (5) guest tickets for the ceremony at Barclays Center.

Extra Tickets for Tandon Ceremony at Barclays Center: Graduating students will have the opportunity to sign up to participate in an extra ticket lottery on the day of ticket and attire distribution (May 8th). If extra tickets are available, winners will receive an email with instructions on how and when to pick up their extra ticket(s). Another option is to ask fellow graduates whom you know if they will be using all of their allotted guest tickets. If they are not, they have the option to order their tickets and give them to you after they pick them up.

Extra Tickets for All-University Ceremony at Yankees Stadium: Graduating students will have the opportunity to sign up to participate in an extra ticket lottery when they order their Commencement tickets beginning in mid-March. If extra tickets are available, no more than one additional ticket will be given to lottery winners. The lottery will be run in mid-May during Commencement ticket distribution and winners will receive an email with instructions on how and when to pick up their extra ticket. Another option is to ask fellow graduates whom you know if they will be using all of their allotted guest tickets. If they are not, they have the option to order their tickets and give them to you after they pick them up.

I’m unable to attend the attire and ticket distribution day. How can I get my attire and tickets?

If you cannot pick up your tickets and attire in person, you may designate a substitute. See the proxy form for more information. Please sign the form and have your substitute bring a copy with them to the distribution, along with a copy of your NYU ID, their NYU ID, and a copy of your order confirmation. If your proxy is picking up both attire and tickets, you will need two copies of all documentation.

PLEASE NOTE: If you did not pre-order attire and fail to claim your ticket order by the end of distribution, those tickets may be distributed to another student.

I requested more tickets than I need. What should I do with the extras?

If you do not need all of the tickets that you originally requested, we kindly ask that you return the extra tickets on the day of distribution, or give them to a fellow graduate who needs more.

PLEASE NOTE:  NYU prohibits the direct or indirect sale or auction of all Commencement tickets. Ticket(s) may not be used for advertising, promotion (including contests, giveaways or sweepstakes) or other trade or commercial purposes.  Students engaging in such activities, as well as any other activity that disrupts the administration of the ceremony and/or violates the Yankee Stadium or Barclays Center Security Policies or any NYU student conduct policy, will be subject to NYU disciplinary sanctions, including without limitation the delayed issuance of a degree or diploma.

I am an international student and need an invitation for visas for my parents/family/guests. How do I get that?

As supporting documentation for your guests, you may need a letter from the Office of the University Registrar verifying your graduation status and Commencement date. You must have applied to graduate prior to requesting the letter. Complete a request form at the Office of the University Registrar, StudentLink Center, 383 Lafayette Street, 1st floor, or send a written request to Graduation Services, P.O. Box 910, New York, NY 10276-0910, fax 212-995-4558. The request must include your name, ID number, email address, phone number, school, anticipated degree, and the number of copies requested (we recommend 1 copy for each international guest). The letter will be available for you to pick up from the Student Services Center within 5 business days of receipt of the request. Visit International Visa Requests for more information.

Do I have to attend Commencement to receive my diploma?

No. Diplomas are not distributed at Commencement, and you do not have to attend commencement in order to receive yours. Diplomas are printed twice a year, typically within eight weeks of the degree conferral date. Degree recipients are emailed after conferral with diploma mailing/pickup information. Please contact the Registrar's Office for any questions about your diploma.
