Short Term Programs at Tandon

Due to Tandon's sometimes strict degree requirements, students may need to adhere to a strict four-year plan, making it difficult to study abroad for an entire semester. If this is the case, yet you want to participate in an international experience prior to graduation, you may want to look into studying abroad through one of the many Short Term Study Abroad programs available at NYU.

Tandon Exclusive Programs

The following opportunities have been developed by Tandon specifically for Tandon students. The staff at Tandon Global, are continuously working to develop global opportunities for upperclassmen during J-term, spring break, and summer. The following courses provide students an opportunity to immerse themselves in a focused academic topic taught by NYU Tandon faculty members with a required travel component.

Some examples of programs that have run in the past include:

  • J-Term
    • UN SDG's Through Social Innovation - South Korea (2025), Philippines (2026)
    • Embracing Diversity - Challenges and Context in Sustainability - Indonesia (2024)
    • Digital Twin Modeling to Tackle Sustainable Development Issues in Smart Cities- Vietnam (2026)
  • Spring Break
    • A Taste of Tulsa: Exploring Innovation, Culture, and History in the Heartland - NYU Tulsa (2025)
    • Doing Business in Portugal - Portugal (2025)
  • Summer
    • Alternative Breaks/Service Learning Trips (Short-term Service Learning Trip):
      • Tanzania (2023)
      • Sri Lanka (2024)
      • Kenya (2025)

New programs are being offered every year so be sure to check back often. J-term programs are generally announced in August/September and Summer programs are announced in December/January via e-blast.

Students can refer to the Tandon Short Term Programs section of the Tandon Global Portal for a list of any open applications and programs that we have right now as well as the Tandon Faculty Led Short Term Study Abroad Programs webpage for a list of some programs.

A number of NYU partner institutions offer short-term programs exclusively for Tandon students. With over 50 opportunities, these programs vary widely in timing, application processes, and program type—ranging from coursework and research to internships. Some programs are designed for undergraduates, others for graduate students. They may take place during J-term, summer, or other times of the year, and they differ in length, content, and cost. Summer offerings are updated each January. After reviewing the available options, if you have questions or would like help determining which programs are right for you, please email tandonglobal@nyu.edu

The colleges and schools of NYU have the opportunity to create short J-term courses and offer them for credit at NYU's academic centers, degree-granting campuses, and also in other parts of the world. Information regarding program details, locations, eligibility, application timeline, costs and contact information can be found on the following website.

The Alternative Breaks (AB) program provides students with the opportunity to learn about political and social community dynamics while becoming a catalyst for collaborative social change. Through learning and practice, students will explore the theory of integrating service, education, and reflection to create meaningful change in their communities. Most, but not all programs, involved an international component.

Financial Aid and Cost

Please keep in mind that students participating in Short-Term Programs may incur additional expenses beyond what is typically covered by semester-based NYU tuition, financial aid, or coursework.

Students may apply for additional summer financial aid (application opens in mid-February), but this funding can only be used for NYU Summer Abroad courses.

For J-term programs, some spring semester financial aid may be applied toward certain costs.

Because financial situations vary, we strongly encourage all students to speak directly with a Financial Aid Counselor for personalized guidance.
