Policies for Graduate Internships (CP-GY) 


PhD Guidance Committee
Within 6 months of passing the PhD qualifying examination(s), PhD students and their dissertation advisers must form or appoint a PhD Guidance Committee. Each PhD Guidance Committee is headed by a chairperson, also known as the adviser of record. The adviser of record (chairperson) will guide the student through the NYU Tandon PhD experience and ensure compliance with Tandon's rules and regulations. This includes taking care of any required paperwork and coordinating any required examinations in a timely manner, including the area exam and dissertation defense. Contract faculty, faculty from other schools without cross-appointments, and external researchers with appropriate qualifications can serve as the actual dissertation adviser and may serve on the committee, but they cannot be the adviser of record. The adviser of record can be tenure and tenure-track (TT) faculty from Tandon, or tenure/TT faculty from other NYU schools that have a cross-appointment with Tandon at the associate level and above (i.e., an affiliate level appointment is not sufficient). Use this form to identify the members of the committee. Email the completed form to Prof. Jose Ulerio, julerio@nyu.edu.

Reconstitute PhD Guidance Committee
Two weeks prior to defending the final PhD dissertation, PhD students will be required to reconstitute the guidance committee. Email this form to Prof. Jose Ulerio, julerio@nyu.edu.

Request to Schedule Dissertation Defense for the PhD Degree
PhD students will use this form to schedule their final PhD dissertation defense. Email it to Prof. Jose Ulerio (julerio@nyu.edu) no later than two (2) weeks prior to the scheduled date. An electronic copy of the student's abstract must be included.

Request to Change Major
After one term of study, certificate and MS students in good academic standing may request to change their major or concentration. No major or concentration changes are allowed during the first term of study. As well, major or concentration change requests must be submitted prior to the end of the add/drop period for the student's penultimate (next to last) semester. No major or concentration changes are allowed during the final semester of study. Approval is required from the student's current department, the department of the new intended major, and the Office of Graduate Academics. Students are only permitted to change majors or concentrations once. Please note that this form cannot be used to move up a degree level — for example, from an MS to a PhD. PhD students may not use this form to change PhD programs. PhD students must submit another admissions application to switch from one PhD program to another.

Request Time Extension to Complete Degree
The program for a graduate certificate must be completed within 3 years. The MS degree programs must be completed within 5 years. For PhD students admitted in Spring 2019 and afterward: the degree must be completed within 6 years for full-time students transferring in 24 or more credits, 7 years for full-time students transferring in less than 24 credits, and 9 years for part-time students, counting from the start of admission into the PhD program. For PhD students admitted prior to Spring 2019: the PhD program must be completed in 6 years for full-time students and 12 years for part-time students from the time of admission for graduate studies at NYU Tandon. First Probation
Students are placed on First Probation following the first semester their cumulative GPA drops below 3.0. All students on their first term of academic probation are required to meet with their academic advisor to discuss a plan to improve their academic progress, and to complete the First Probation form. Once the form has been completed and signed by both the student and their advisor, the student must then submit the completed form to the Office of Graduate Academics.

Final Probation
Students are placed on Final Probation (or second academic probation) following the second semester their cumulative GPA drops below 3.0. All students on Final Probation are required to again meet with their academic advisor to discuss a plan to improve their academic status, and to complete the Final Probation form. Once the form has been completed and signed by both the student and their advisor, the student must then submit the completed form to the Office of Graduate Academics. Tandon graduate students are only allotted two terms of academic probation. Any student whose cumulative GPA remains below 3.0 at the end of their Final Probation semester (when all grades are posted) will be academically disqualified and dismissed from NYU Tandon.

Note about the Summer Semester: Academic status is determined based on a student's cumulative GPA at the end of the fall and spring semesters. Although students may take courses to improve their grades in the summer term, this will not affect their academic status for the following fall semester. For example, if a student has a 2.9 cumulative GPA at the end of the spring term and raises their cumulative GPA to 3.0 in the summer term, the student will still be on academic probation in the fall term, because their academic status is based on their cumulative GPA at the end of the spring term. However, if a student was admitted in the summer term and the summer term is their first term as a graduate student at NYU Tandon, then their academic status for their following term will be based on their summer grades, since the summer term was their first term. Subsequent summer terms beyond their first term will not affect their academic status.

Acknowledgment of Disqualification and Successful Appeal
Students are academically disqualified from further study at NYU Tandon if their cumulative GPA is below 3.0 for more than two semesters (semesters do not have to be sequential). Students who have been disqualified may appeal to the Graduate Appeals Committee for one final semester of study. If the Committee approves, then the student must meet with his/her academic advisor and complete the Acknowledgment of Disqualification and Successful Appeal form. After the advisor and student have signed the form, the student will then give the form to the Office of Graduate Academics.

A Post-Academic DQ Probation hold will be placed on Albert for students who have been granted an extra semester. This hold blocks all registration activity on a date to be determined by Graduate Academics, normally before the start of the new semester. Students must make all registration changes before the hold takes effect. Students approved for post-disqualification terms are no longer eligible to receive a Leave of Absence.

This form is to be used by graduate (MS and PhD) students who wish to appeal their academic disqualification from NYU Tandon.
