Peer Recruiting Advice Session
On Thursday, September 3, 2020, students from the entering fall 2020 cohort of the NYU Tandon MSFE program joined the first Peer Recruiting Advice Session of the academic year, via zoom! 2nd year panelists Camilla Zhang, Sabrina Wei, Nora Xu and Jinyang Li shared their insights on making industry connections, nailing the interview, and everything in between! The FRE Career team looks forward to many productive and interactive career workshops ahead this year.
FRE Peer Recruiting Advice Panel
FRE students often find that the best sources of advice are right here on campus! On Tuesday, February 11, 2020, FRE students gathered for the latest FRE Peer Recruiting Advice Panel in the MakerSpace! At this panel, four graduating FRE students shared their wisdom on the best strategies for job hunting! Featured panelists (left to right in photo) Xia "Summer" Tu, Mohan Liu, Rupal Jain, and Chon Ip "Henry" Sio, gave the inside scoop on how they landed their dream jobs! Panel topics included differences between the U.S. and China job market, preparing for interviews, how to be creative in making networking connections, and more.
NYU FRE Alumni Meetup 2020
On Wednesday, January 29, 2020, NYU Tandon Finance & Risk Engineering Alumni enthusiastically gathered for their first alumni meetup event of 2020! The event, which was held at Slattery’s Midtown Pub, featured hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and great company. The well-attended event featured 50 attendees ranging from NYU FRE classes of 1997 to 2019! The Finance & Risk Engineering Department strongly values alumni connectivity and looks forward to continuing at least 2 alumni events per year!
2019 Interview Prep Workshop
On Wednesday, October 23, 2019, FRE students were joined by several industry professionals for a real-life look into the world of quant interviews! The event began as an advice panel, and then broke out into group interviews, which allowed students to hear first-hand interview questions and feedback from professionals across different areas of industry. Students received advice on how to talk about the financial markets, how to interact with an interviewer throughout the meeting, the best way to explain resume projects, and much more.
FRE Alumni Job Spotlight Event
On Thursday, September 12, 2019, Finance & Risk Engineering students packed the Pfizer auditorium for the first ever “Alumni Job Spotlight” Event. At this event, students were joined by 4 FRE alumni who enlightened students with separate, 30 minute overviews of different aspects of industry. Chao Lian of Nomura spoke about his global FRTB BA job function; Ryan Poirier of Salt Financial spoke about his position in Index and Product Research; Haojie Jing of Soros financial gave a deep dive into life as a Quant Strat, and Ney Sheridan of Centiva shed light on the world of Equity Volatility trader. Students had the opportunity to ask questions after each job spotlight talk, which helped them to better understand what it takes to succeed in these particular areas of industry. The FRE department looks forward to hosting additional job spotlight events in the coming months!
Learning from the Best: FRE Recruiting Best Practices Panel
On Tuesday, September 10, 2019, FRE hosted the latest installment of the FRE Recruiting Best Practices Advice Panel. This event — which is always a fan favorite — features successful second year students who share their valuable recruitment advice with 1st year students.
The September panel featured 2nd year students Shreya Gossain (Interned with Barclays, Market Risk Division), Gaurav Shah (Interned with American Express, Global Risk, Banking and Compliance group), Yuxing Liang (Interned with Deutsche Bank, Global Markets Division), Xiaowen Wang (Interned with Goldman Sachs, Investment Management Division), and Shreyank Gandhi (Interned with KBW, Equity Research). Panel topics included advice on the best interview preparation books, how to balance school and recruiting, interview topics and more!
Wine & Cheese Alumni Mixer
On December 12, 2018, Alumni of the FRE department gathered together at Rogers Hall — and this time, it wasn’t for class! FRE alumni enjoyed cheese, wine, and great company as they caught up with former classmates and professors at the fall semester FRE Alumni Wine and Cheese Networking Mixer! Current FRE Students were delighted to also have the opportunity to attend this event and network with their predecessors. The department intends to continue bringing together FRE alum at such events at least once a semester.
FRE 3rd Annual Women in Quant Finance Advice Panel
For the 3rd year in row, the department brought together a group of impressive women quant professionals to provide insight into all things “Quant” during an engaging panel discussion and networking event on February 27, 2019. The panel — which was moderated by Edith Mandel, NYU Tandon Adjunct Professor and founder of Greenwich Street Advisors — featured Senior Researcher Ioana Boier (Senior Quant Researcher), Adila McHich (FRE Alumnae and Director of Energy Research and Product Development at CME Group), and Sujatha Srinivasan (co-head of Market Risk Specialists at Goldman Sachs). With a 46% female student population, it’s no surprise that was a well-attended event!
2018 “Interviewing Best Practices” Workshop
On Monday, October 15th, Tandon MSFE Students had the opportunity tackle real-life quant interview questions and receive on-the-spot feedback and advice from seasoned industry professionals! The mock interviews came after an interactive "interviewing best practices" panel which featured Wall Street professionals Thomas Philips, Yaoxi Li, Jiajun (Jim) Shuang, FRM, Weihua (Chris) Zhu, Chao Lian, Viraj Shetty, Jerome Benveniste and Paul Greenberg. The opportunity to hear advice and then immediately have the chance to apply that knowledge into a real-world interview situation was a very valuable one for the Finance and Risk Engineering students. The students appreciated this chance to further develop their interview skills while also building their industry network.
Tips on How to Succeed
On Wednesday, September 19, 2018 over 75 first-year MS in Financial Engineering students gathered to hear a panel of successful second-year MSFE students speak about their experiences and insights on topics such as the internship seeking process, preparing for interviews, and how they ultimately landed full-time jobs after their summer internships. 2nd year students featured included Yusi (Sara) Yang, Jianqiu (Lisa) Chen, Zhongyuan (Lucas) Bi, Tiancheng Hou, Pei-Ling Wu, Xiao Liu, and Fangya (Freya) Li. After the panel concluded, students had the chance to ask individual questions and network with one another.
“Welcome to NYC” Boat Cruise Event
On Thursday, August 9, 2018, new fall 2018 cohort of students in the NYU Tandon MSFE Program joined together for a welcome boat cruise around NYC! Students enjoyed getting to know each other and NYC while sailing around and enjoying great views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Brooklyn Bridge, and the Manhattan Skyline!
NYU FRE MSFE Alumni Mixer
On May 7, 2018 FRE students were joined by NYU MSFE Alumni for an evening of networking! Alumni in attendance ranged from graduates between 1997–2017 and included professionals from various areas of industry. This was a great opportunity for FRE students to make professional mentorship connections, and for alumni to re-connect with one another. We look forward to continuing these mixers at least 1-2 times a year.
FRE Distinguished Alumnus Visit
On April 10, 2018 MSFE students in the Finance & Risk Engineering Department had the opportunity to hear from Chief Technology Officer of Chicago Trading Company & New York University FRE MSFE Alumnus Russell McManus. Russ shared valuable career advice and insight with our students, and we are proud to have alumni like Russ staying connected with the program!
Industry Women in Quant Finance Panel
On February 26, 2018, FRE MSFE Students were joined by a panel of accomplished industry women in Quantitative Finance for a panel and networking event! The panel was moderated by Edith Mandel (NYU Adjunct Professor & founder of Greenwich Street Advisors) and featured panelists Ioana Boier of Citadel LLC, Sara Strang of Alphadyne, and Ingrid Tierens of Goldman Sachs. The discussion explored topics such as balancing work & life, transitioning between buy-side and sell-side jobs and how to best prepare for interviews. Students took advantage of their time with the guest panelists by connecting one-on-one for follow up questions after the event.
Interview Prep Workshop
On October 9th 2017, over 100 FRE students attended the FRE Mock Interview Workshop to prepare them for job interviews! The event was moderated by NYU Adjunct Professor and former Head of Front Office Risk at BNP Paribas, Thomas Phillips, and the featured guests included NYU Adjunct Professor and former Managing Director of Highbridge Capital Jerome Beneviste, as well as Nikhil Gautam Chaudhari (J.P. Morgan, FRE Alum), Yuansheng Li (Bank of Communications, FRE Alum), and Yaoxi Douglas Li (Goldman Sachs, FRE Alum). The event kicked off with an “interviewing best practices” advice panel, and later transitioned to group mock interviews. This event added great value in providing FRE students with the real life scoop on how interviews are conducted across various areas of industry!
Recruiting Advice Panel
On November 16, 2017, FRE students had the opportunity to hear from featured graduating FRE students in a “Recruiting Advice Panel.” The featured panelists included Vibhati Joshi (December 2017 grad, joining American Express), Qijia Lou (May 2018 grad, joining MKP), Xingyue Huang (December 2017 grad, joining JP Morgan), and Mengzhou Jojo Tang (May 2018 grad, joining Jeffries). The panel covered a range of topics, including how to network, tips for determining a career focus, preparing for interviews, and how to increase the chance of a return full-time offer after an internship. It was a well-attended event and was great to see successful graduating FRE students share such valuable insight with their peers!
