277 million more harmful posts could flood Facebook and Instagram, study says

After Meta announced changes to content moderation policies, the Center for Countering Digital Hate estimates 277 million more harmful posts could appear on Facebook and Instagram annually. The key change involves relying on user reports rather than automated systems to identify hate speech. “Without any regulatory or economic incentives to provide actual transparency, we have no true idea of how much dangerous or even illegal content is actually enforced, whether by their automated systems or user reports,” said Yaёl Eisenstat, Director of Policy and Impact at Cybersecurity for Democracy, part of the NYU Center for Cybersecurity.
