Erdem Varol is an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at Tandon School of Engineering, NYU. He heads the Neuroinformatics Lab focused on developing next-generation signal processing and analysis tools for neuroscience data. He's also a part of the VIDA center. Previously, he was a postdoc at the Department of Statistics, Zuckerman Institute, Columbia University with Liam Paninski. Before that, he did his Ph.D. at the Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania under Christos Davatzikos. Whilst at Penn, he also received an A.M degree in Statistics from the Wharton School. He is the recipient of the NIH/NIMH K99/R00 award in 2022.
His research interest lie in the intersection of computer science, neuroscience and genomics. Particularly, he is interested in building causal models that explains neural network connectivity in human and animal brains as a function of genetic signatures.
