About the Lecture
From Lab Research to Real-World Impact: Resources for STEM PhDs & Postdocs
How can promising research move beyond the laboratory and create meaningful real-world impact?
This session introduces STEM PhD students and postdocs to the resources and support available through NYU’s Leslie Entrepreneurial Institute to help researchers explore the pathways from discovery to application. We will discuss how to recognize the potential commercial and societal impact of research, understand customer and market needs, explore intellectual property and technology transfer considerations, and evaluate different pathways for translating research into practice.
The session will also provide an overview of resources available to NYU researchers, including entrepreneurship programs, mentoring and customer discovery, commercialization support, venture development, and funding opportunities such as NSF I-Corps and SBIR/STTR.
Whether your goal is to launch a startup, license a technology, collaborate with industry, or simply explore the potential applications of your research, this session will provide practical guidance on where to start and how the Leslie Entrepreneurial Institute can help.
About the Speaker
Syed Barizuddin is an innovation and research commercialization professional with more than 15 years of experience supporting university researchers, entrepreneurs, and technology-based startups. His expertise spans technology transfer, startup formation, customer discovery, venture development, and securing federal funding through programs such as SBIR/STTR, as well as funding from state programs and angel investors.
Syed currently serves as the Asst Dir of the Leslie Entrepreneurial Institute. Before joining NYU, he served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Missouri Innovation Center, where he led organizational strategy, operations and oversaw entrepreneurship programs and commercialization support for a portfolio of science- and technology-based companies. He previously served as Program Director of the NIH-funded Midwest Biomedical Accelerator Consortium and has founded and led technology startups supported by the NSF, NIH, DoD, and EPA.
Syed holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Missouri and brings a multidisciplinary technical background spanning biosensors/diagnostics, environmental, nanotechnology, semiconductors, and advanced materials. He is an inventor on multiple patents and invention disclosures, has authored peer-reviewed scientific publications, and has served as a proposal reviewer for federal research and innovation programs.
Syed is passionate about helping researchers translate promising discoveries into commercially viable technologies and ventures that create meaningful real-world impact.
