Academic Advising

Each student is assigned an academic advisor who will provide regular and ongoing communication about course registration, deadlines, and academic resources. First-semester students will hear from their advisor via email soon after making their deposit.

Digital Learning degree students must adhere to NYU Tandon’s graduate academic policies. We strongly encourage all students to be familiar with these policies, which can be found in the NYU Tandon Bulletin. Below are key considerations regarding common Tandon policies that impact our students' academic journey.

Continuous Enrollment

All graduate students must be continuously enrolled in a minimum of 1.5 credits each fall and spring semester until graduation. Students who do not enroll for a term and do not receive an approved Leave of Absence, will be discontinued from the program. Discontinuation will require readmission to the degree program.

Time for Completion

Students enrolled in M.S. degree programs must complete all degree requirements within 5 years from the beginning of graduate studies at NYU Tandon.

Transfer Credits

A maximum of 9 credits may be accepted towards M.S. degrees. Students must submit transfer credit requests before the end of the first semester of matriculation. Along with meeting Tandon’s transfer credit requirements, the director of each program will review submitted transfer credit requests and make a decision if the previous course(s) are equivalent to course(s) in the M.S. programs.

Add/Drop Period

NYU’s Academic Calendar indicates each semester’s add/drop deadline. Students can add/drop course(s) until this deadline. All course schedules are final after the add/drop deadline, and late add/drop requests are not accepted. After the add/drop period, dropping a course will result in a withdrawal (see below for withdrawal details). Please note that the summer semester is condensed, therefore, the add/drop period is significantly shorter. Before dropping a course, it is recommended that students review NYU’s Refund Schedule.

Leave of Absence

Students may need to take a semester off. To officially take a break from the program, students must submit a Leave of Absence (LOA). Students, after completing their first semester, are eligible for two semesters of LOA during their time in the graduate program. Taking a leave extends students’ time for degree completion. Leave of Absence requests must be submitted by the add/drop deadline of the applicable semester. Please note LOAs are not required for the summer semester, as summer is an optional semester. Before submitting a LOA request, it is recommended that students review NYU’s Refund Schedule.

Withdrawals

Students can withdraw from a course(s) without academic penalty until the published withdrawal date on NYU’s Academic Calendar. While withdrawing before the deadline does not impact a student’s cumulative GPA, a ‘W’ will remain on a student’s transcript. Students can Course Withdrawal, to withdraw from one of their semester courses. If students wish to withdraw from all courses for a single term, they will submit a Term Withdrawal. A Total Withdrawal is a withdrawal from all University studies before program completion and without intent to return for a future term. Before withdrawing, it is recommended that students review NYU’s Refund Schedule.

Grading

Students in Tandon graduate courses will earn a letter grade, with the lowest grade before a failing (F) grade equaling C. Course instructors will outline the requirements of their specific course to earn the correlating letter grade. There are no pass/fail options for Tandon for-credit graduate level courses. When converting letter grades to calculate a grade point average (GPA), Tandon follows NYU’s grading scale.

Auditing Course(s)

Students can audit course(s); however, students cannot audit a required course, and they cannot retake the course for a grade after auditing. Academic advisors must receive requests for auditing a course by the start of each semester and auditing requests cannot be reversed after processing. When auditing a course, tuition charges are applied to a student’s account.

Graduation Application

All students must apply for graduation in their final semester. Applying for graduation indicates that the student will be completing all academic requirements at the end of the term and alerts the University to review the student’s record in order to confer the student’s degree. The deadline to apply for graduation is noted on NYU’s Academic Calendar. Graduates are eligible to participate in NYU’s Commencement activities that occur annually in mid-May.
