Wider streets are more dangerous for pedestrians to cross
A study by Center for Urban Science + Progress Faculty Fellow Marcel Moran and Professor Debra Laefer revealed longer crosswalks significantly increase pedestrian accident risks. Analyzing 49,000 crossings in Paris, San Francisco, and Irvine, researchers found collision rates increased with above-average crossing distances - up to 43% in Irvine. According to Moran, "Crossing distance is measurable at the scale of entire cities, is fundamental to pedestrian safety and is addressable with low-tech traffic calming."
