Wastewater treatment plants funnel PFAS into drinking water

A study led by incoming assistant professor Bridger Ruyle reveals that wastewater treatment plants release enough PFAS to contaminate drinking water above safe levels for up to 23 million Americans during droughts. The research also found that most fluorinated compounds in treated wastewater come from pharmaceuticals, not regulated PFAS. "It's a funnel into the environment," says Ruyle. "You capture a bunch of things from a bunch of different places, and it's all released in one place."
