In NYC, companies will have to prove their AI hiring software isn't sexist or racist
NYC’s recent Automated Employment Decision Tool law (Law 144), enforced starting July 5 2023, now requires employers that use AI technologies in hiring to have those tools audited for bias by a third party. “I’m really glad the law is on the books, that there are rules now and we’re going to start enforcing them,” said Julia Stoyanovich, director at the Center for Responsible AI, noting that “there are also lots of gaps. For example, the bias audit is very limited in terms of categories. We don’t look at age-based discrimination, for example, which in hiring is a huge deal, or disabilities.”
