New York City DOT tackles overweight truck problem

New York City has pioneered the use of weigh-in-motion (WIM) sensors for direct enforcement of truck weight limits on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, becoming the first U.S. municipality to issue tickets without manual weighing. This approach, developed with input from researchers including Kaan Ozbay has led to a significant reduction in overweight vehicles, addressing infrastructure damage and safety concerns. The city is now advocating for national WIM sensor standards to enable wider adoption, facing challenges in standardization and implementation.
