As battery fires mount, Sanitation Department scrambles to deal with the hazardous aftermath

Professor Nikhil Gupta, member of NYU Tandon's Center for Cybersecurity, commented on the fact that lithium-ion batteries caused so many fires last year that New York City's Sanitation Department ran out of room to store the hazardous residue. “The number of different battery sizes and types which are in the market needs to be regulated,” said Gupta, acknowledging that individuals may not recognize the gravity of the issue. “I don’t know how people will see recycling of [these batteries] to be very important because nobody’s going to go to Home Depot just to drop off batteries [from] a [wrist]watch.”
