Orientation Leaders


The Office of Student Leadership & Engagement employs enthusiastic and resourceful student representatives of our diverse undergraduate population as orientation leaders and captains to assist with fall and spring new student orientation.


Orientation Leaders

Orientation Leaders (OLs) provide information and support to new incoming students as well as serve as a role model and resource.

Qualifications:

Leaders must be current students at NYU Tandon and are required to have completed at least one semester and NYU Tandon and be in good academic and disciplinary standing for both terms. OLs should be able to assume leadership roles and complete all assigned tasks. Positive representation of NYU Tandon is required. Commitment to serving students, parents, and other Institute staff; including diverse populations, and a customer service philosophy are necessary. Previous experience in a team or previous leadership experience is helpful, but not required.

We are looking for a diverse group of students who possess the following qualifications:

  • Good academic and disciplinary standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students)
  • Campus or Community involvement (i.e. service, extra-curricular activities, etc.)
  • Team player
  • Positive attitude
  • Public speaking skills
  • Ability to work with diverse students, parents, faculty and staff
  • Desire to be a leader and role-model, including on-campus, on-line and in the community
  • Flexibility and ability to think on your feet
  • Desire to assist new students in their transition to the Tandon School of Engineering

Time commitment:

Orientation leaders are required to attend all training sessions, which typically span 2-3 days and take place the week before Orientation. Orientation leaders may not have other time commitments during assigned orientation program sessions, however, many leaders have outside employment, with your orientation schedule taking precedence over outside employment. All selected leaders will be given a schedule of expected coverage in advance so that you may plan personal time accordingly. 

Remuneration for Summer 2024: $500 leadership award following completion of Orientation programming.


Orientation Captain

Orientation Captains are a select group of student leaders who play a vital role in designing elements and carrying out new student orientation at the Tandon School of Engineering. They have the experience of at least one NSO/NGSO under their belt and take point coordinating the Orientation Leaders, easing the transition for new students into the NYU Tandon School of Engineering campus and Brooklyn community. Captains will be focused primarily on Tandon orientation programs and will not be able to participate as NYU Welcome leaders.

What does it take to become an Orientation Captain?

The ideal candidate has the interpersonal skills necessary for interacting with both new students and their families. They should be outstanding upperclass students with previous orientation experience and a proven leadership track record. Captains will help recruit and train new Orientation Leaders and help plan and administrate the Orientation Leader experience. Captains must be positive role models both inside and outside of their duties as Captains. Captains must have the following skills and abilities:

  • Team players who cooperate with other OLs, faculty, and staff
  • Possess a high level of maturity and sense of responsibility
  • Ability to work with diverse students, parents, faculty and staff
  • Maintain a high level of energy, enthusiasm and self-motivation
  • Adapt and adjust quickly to different situations and responsibilities
  • Analyze information and make informed decisions
  • Campus or Community involvement (i.e. service, extra-curricular activities, etc.)

The minimum qualifications required to be an Orientation Captain are as follows:

  • At least one year previous experience as an NYU Tandon School of Engineering Orientation Leader
  • Completion of one full semester at NYU
  • Good academic and disciplinary standing at time of application and throughout the OL program
  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students
  • Ability to work a set number of hours weekly over the months of June, July, and August in preparation for orientation
  • Attendance at all information sessions, trainings, and Orientation programs

Remuneration for Summer 2024: $16/hour for Undergraduate Orientation Captains and $28.25/hour for Graduate Orientation Captains
