FAQS
Do I have to pay anything extra to study abroad?
For the most part, your semester abroad should cost around the same as a semester in New York City studying at Tandon. Depending where you go, it might even be cheaper!
For all semester long programs, your tuition stays exactly the same and any loans or scholarships you're receiving you'll continue to receive.
You will have to pay for housing while abroad so if you live at home in NYC and commute to school, this will be an additional cost. However, if you do one of our study away sites the Office of Financial Aid will usually try to give you extra money to help cover this new cost. Students who participate on the exchange programs will find their housing costs to be significantly cheaper than NYU housing.
Finally, you will be responsible for paying for your flight and any immigration documents.
While in country, your day to day expenses will vary depending on your lifestyle and what location you go to. For example, London is on par (if not more expensive) than the cost of living in NYC but students who study abroad in Shanghai find that they daily cost of living is significantly cheaper than NYC. The majority of locations do not have meal plans so keep that in mind as well.
I'm getting scholarships and financial aid, how does that work with study abroad?
For all semester long programs, your tuition stays exactly the same and any loans or scholarships you're receiving you'll continue to receive.
Students who currently receive financial aid may continue to receive this assistance and apply it towards their study abroad semester or year. Financial aid programs that may be transferable for study abroad include Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, and Parent (PLUS) Loans. For further information regarding financial assistance please contact the Financial Aid Office.
Can I apply for any additional scholarships to help pay for study abroad?
Students may also be eligible for a private scholarship or grant from an outside organization or agency. Some sources to explore are employers, unions, professional organizations, and community and special interest groups.

It is important to be aware of the financial implications that receiving an outside scholarship can have. Outside scholarships are considered a financial aid resource and must be added to a student's total financial aid award. The Office of Financial Aid first applies the outside scholarship to a student's unmet need that is not already covered by financial aid. In some cases, loans not based on financial need may be reduced (private loans, Federal Unsubsidized Loans, Federal PLUS Loans, Graduate PLUS). If the student's need is already met by need-based aid, then that aid is replaced with the outside scholarship. Need-based loans are first replaced. If the outside scholarship exceeds the loan amounts, work-study and need-based grants are the next to be replaced. In most cases it is not necessary to reduce an NYU scholarship. Total aid (including outside assistance) cannot exceed the total cost of attendance.

I am receiving funding for housing at NYU, how can that apply for housing at an international exchange location?
Your housing financial aid will apply even if you are participating in an international exchange program where you will need to pay the school or landlord directly.
Depending on your circumstance, there may be specific requirements or forms you may need to fill out to receive this funding.
Tandon Global IS NOT granted access to your financial aid package; as such should this apply to you, you will need to reach out directly to the Financial Aid Office.
Should the financial aid office request supporting documentation, at that time Tandon Global will assist.
