K-12 Outreach

The School of Engineering's Center for K-12 STEM Education seeks to extend the reach of the university’s high-quality programs by both building on success and leading new projects and initiatives.

In our K-12 STEM education programs, the School of Engineering faculty, students and administrators align our work in classrooms with articulated science and math learning standards, the new Common Core standards and emerging standards in engineering, technology and other disciplines. We engage teachers directly in programs and remain attentive to the learning objectives of the schools and students that participate in our initiatives.

Urban Assembly Institute

Our College preparation and readiness for STEM partnership with the Urban Assembly Institute (UAI) of Math and Science for Young Women is a model collaboration designed and run by the Center for K-12 STEM Education. Young women in grades six through twelve who attend the UAI receive intensive tutoring and mentoring services from School of Engineering students; UAI teachers benefit from extensive professional development opportunities through our faculty; and a growing number of students in the UAI high school take structured, custom-designed, college-level classes in engineering, math and other disciplines at our Brooklyn campus.

Intro to CS and Cyber Security

The Computer Science and Cyber Security Program for High School Women provides a unique opportunity for young women from the NY metropolitan area to be introduced to career opportunities in these exciting fields.

Qualified young women are selected to engage in two weeks of lectures, hands-on training, and day trips in New York City to prepare them for participation in the nationwide CSAW High School Cyber Forensics Challenge hosted annually by the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.

Black Girls CODE

Black Girls CODE is devoted to showing the world that black girls can code, and do so much more. By reaching out to the community through workshops and after school programs, Black Girls CODE introduces computer coding lessons to young girls from underrepresented communities in programming languages such as Scratch or Ruby on Rails. Black Girls CODE has set out to prove to the world that girls of every color have the skills to become the programmers of tomorrow. By promoting classes and programs we hope to grow the number of women of color working in technology and give underprivileged girls a chance to become the masters of their technological worlds.

Prospective Students

Tandon-WEST

Tandon School of Engineering Women in Engineering, Science and Technology (Tandon-WEST) is held twice a year at the Fall Open House and the Weekend on the Square admitted student event. Tandon-WEST provides prospective students and admitted students with the opportunity to find out about the accomplishments of NYU women in fields traditionally dominated by men. Parents and high school students from the region gather at the university to listen to panelists of established professionals, as well as women currently enrolled at the NYU School of Engineering discuss their experiences.

WEST FEST

An event held each summer for accepted women students that provides students with the opportunity to meet fellow prospective students. Along with the opportunity to meet with women campus student organizations such as STEMinist, Society of Women Engineers, and Women in Search of Excellence, students also have the opportunity to connect with on campus resources such as the Office of Financial Aid, Student Health Center, Resident Life and many more.

Facebook Live

The Office of Enrollment Management hosts a series of Facebook Lives to address questions from prospective women students about their opportunities here at Tandon.

Girls Talk Tech

The Google Anita Borg Scholars Community and the NYU Tandon School of Engineering host a celebration each Fall to honor Anita Borg. Anita Borg was a computer scientist who advocated for women in the tech community. Continuing her legacy, our mission is to increase the number of women in technology careers. "Girls Talk Tech", gives students an opportunity to speak with other students, faculty, and professionals, and learn about what it's really like to pursue a career in tech fields.

Women in Engineering Explorations Community

at the Othmer Residence Hall

The Women at Tandon Explorations Community at NYU is a women-themed floor in the Othmer Residence Hall created to offer women students a strong support system to reinforce their positive experience as science, technology, engineering and math students. The community will offer opportunities to network with successful alumnae and women students, participate in social functions, get involved in community service, and organize and attend events and activities relevant to women students at Tandon.

WoMentorship Program

The WoMentorship Program matches sophomore and junior undergraduate women with upper-class women, and first-year graduate women with second-year graduate women. Mentor and mentees meet at least eight times each semester and engage in social activities, academic opportunities, and career and professional development. Mentors and their mentees independently plan one-on-one meetings and activities, and attend campus events and programs together.

  • Mentors are dynamic students who aid in the growth and progression of their mentees, academically and socially. Mentors also act as role models and lead by example, while serving as a link to student resources on both the Brooklyn and Washington Square campuses.
  • Mentees are students who are looking to further engage and learn from other women mentors within the SOE community. Mentees sign up to receive the above benefits from mentors, while contributing to the development of these relationships and the overall success of growing a strong network of women in engineering at SOE.

Women's Summit

An initiative of the Division of Student Affairs, the Women's Summit exists to empower women students by building connections to faculty, alumna and each other, while providing resources for and promoting discussion of issues and topics relevant to women in STEM. Each year the Summit focuses on sharing knowledge, experience and expertise among women at the School of Engineering and in the STEM community at NYU’s Washington Square Campus.

Alumnae Advisory Council Student Engagement Awards

Thompson - Bartlett Fellows

Through a generous gift from Ms. Dede Thompson Bartlett, whose father, Mr. George Juul Thompson, was a graduate of the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1930, students are encouraged to participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program. This year marked the third year of the Thompson Bartlett Fellowship, in which nine of this summer’s researchers were graciously supported through this fellowship.
