Students to battle cyber-security wits during CSAW 2007
Students from Boise to Brooklyn will take part in Poly’s fourth annual Cyber Security Awareness Week (CSAW) which takes issues of cyber security out of the classroom and into a more competitive arena. During this year’s CSAW, “Battles in the Cyber World,” individuals and teams from U.S. universities, colleges and high schools will attack eight contest categories, from digital forensics to hardware design. Less-technical poster and essay contests are also on this year’s list. Depending on the category, participants have about two weeks after topics are announced on November 1 to prepare their submissions, which they can do remotely.
CSAW will culminate during the first week of December when finalists will attend a not-to-be-missed awards ceremony. Winners will receive cash prizes, iPod touches, iPod nanos and priceless exposure to potential employers such as Pitney Bowes, Microsoft and igxglobal who will help select winning entries.
Professor Nasir Memon, Director of Poly’s Information and Internet Security Lab and CSAW founder, created the event as a fun, challenging way to bolster interest and awareness about cyber security among students and professionals. Last year, nearly 250 students from 28 tri-state area universities participated. Now that CSAW has gone national, Memon expects those figures to double and the level of competition to soar.
