San Francisco’s upcoming bike plan got its backbone during COVID
San Francisco's 18 Slow Streets program aims to reduce traffic speeds to under 15 mph and limit vehicle volume to fewer than 1,000 cars daily on select streets. Analysis shows these streets reduced injury collisions by 45 percent, which CUSP Faculty Fellow Marcel Moran calls "a huge success story." The streets vary in length and effectiveness — from successful implementations like Page Street with traffic diverters, to challenging cases like Lake Street, which still exceeds traffic limits despite its slow designation.
