Poly Professors Awarded State Grants to Promote Rigorous Pre-engineering

Under the Engineers of the Future Program, New York State Education Department has awarded Polytechnic University two grants to support summer training projects that will help middle and high school teachers implement rigorous pre-engineering curricula with an emphasis on laboratory-based activities and extensive hands-on experience.

The first grant of $240,654 was awarded for a project titled "Summer Mechatronics Institute for Teachers (SUMMIT)" led by Professor Vikram Kapila and Professor Noel N. Kriftcher. Twenty teachers from New York City school system will be recruited, trained, and mentored in hands-on engineering design in a four week summer workshop at Polytechnic University. The project will enhance teachers’ technical competency through professional development in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Read the project abstract.

The New York State Education Department also awarded Polytechnic University a $297,455 grant for "Summer Workshop in Instrumentation, Sensors and Engineering (WISE)," a project led by Professor Magued G. Iskander, Professor Vikram Kapila, and Professor Noel N. Kriftcher. This project will introduce 20 teachers from two Lower Hudson school districts and two Long Island school districts to hands-on engineering design in an intensive two-week residential workshop at Polytechnic University.
