In 2008, London’s Brick Lane began padding lampposts to prevent “walk-and-text” injuries, resulting. Naturally, the U.S. media ran with the story, so perfectly fitting the narrative of coddled socialists unable to navigate the hard realities of life.
Of course, Americans are hardly immune to the dangers of texting and walking/driving. But when we see a problem, we don’t start taping pillows to poles – we launch a competition.
Earlier this week, AT&T, along with partners at NYC Media Lab and NYU’s Polytechnic, launched Connected Intersections – a traffic safety initiative soliciting ideas on improving pedestrian, cyclist, and driver safety through the use of smart phones, wearable tech, and wireless networks. Read more.
