NYU study finds uptick in gun sales ‘unintended consequence’ of media coverage of gun control after mass shootings

Media coverage of gun control helps drive up firearms sales after mass shootings, an unintended consequence that’s particularly pronounced in states with lax firearms regulations, a New York University study showed Monday. … “The study found people will tend to buy a gun because they fear their right will be restricted,” lead study author Maurizio Porfiri of NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering told the Daily News. “It’s an important message from our analysis. We cannot exclude they did not [purchase a gun] out of fear, but we didn’t find that."
