NYU-Poly Cyber Security Awareness Week to Host Kaspersky’s North American Cup Student Research Challenge
In a reprise of last year’s successful student challenges during Polytechnic Institute of New York University’s (NYU-Poly) Cyber Security Awareness Week, Kaspersky Lab’s North American Cup at NYU-Poly CSAW will return to the school’s Brooklyn campus for the 9th Annual CSAW November 15-17, 2012.
The NYU-Poly CSAW challenges are among the oldest and broadest student-led competitions, and build awareness of the increasing threats to privacy and security issues for individuals, governments, business and smart infrastructure. The challenges and the finals week encourage students to pursue studies in the field and to build networks to help them keep abreast of the fast-changing knowledge base.
Kaspersky Lab’s North American Cup at CSAW will return with a student competition for research papers as well as its conference with topics for both students and professionals.
Kaspersky Lab’s “CyberSecurity for the Next Generation” annual competition brings together young professionals and researchers; IT security experts and professors; and decision-makers from IT business and media from all over the world in a collaborative and creative environment. The event gives students the opportunity to present and discuss the most burning issues relating to global cybercrime.
“NYU-Poly and CSAW welcome the return of Kaspersky Lab as an advocate of student research as well as a source of new knowledge for our students and the wider security community,” said Nasir Memon, founder of CSAW, director of the NYU-Poly Information Systems and Internet Security Lab and founding director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Security and Privacy (CRISSP), a collaboration of NYU-Poly and NYU schools. “Kaspersky Lab’s participation strengthens CSAW by helping students build strong professional networks that they can use throughout their careers, and by updating them with news and techniques from the front lines of security defense.”

Kaspersky Lab’s North American Cup at CSAW will offer young researchers a unique opportunity to present their original research and at the same time improve their knowledge of IT security. They will gain valuable experience and the opportunity to communicate with renowned industry experts. Participants will showcase their projects in front of key academic and industry experts and open themselves to potential new and attractive career opportunities in IT security.
Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students from schools based in the United States and Canada are eligible to participate in the Kaspersky Lab’s North American Cup at CSAW by registering at http://www.kaspersky.com/educational-events. Participation is free of charge, and the deadline for submission is October 16, 2012. Paper topics include emerging threats for emerging platforms; securing cloud, virtual and “big-data” infrastructure; future protection technologies; securing corporate infrastructure; and security education. A committee of Kaspersky Lab experts, IT security professors and decision-makers from IT business and media will select finalists to attend Kaspersky Lab’s North American Cup at CSAW in November. Kaspersky Lab will cover all participants’ travel and accommodation expenses.
The winners will receive generous cash prizes as well as an invitation to attend the international final conference that every year brings together the winners from the regional elimination rounds. The final stage will take place in the United Kingdom in May 2013.
CSAW challenges are led by students of NYU-Poly’s cyber security program, a widely recognized center of excellence in information assurance and cyber security. Its faculty record in research and teaching is among the most impressive in the United States, with numerous National Science Foundation and other research awards, editorial positions on principal research journals, significant innovative patents and key posts at national and international scholarly societies. The program has been named a National Security Agency/Department of Homeland Security Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education as well as a Center of Academic Excellence in Research. In November 2011, the Sloan Consortium, the country's most prominent association of academic institutions in online higher education, recognized NYU-Poly's cyber security virtual degree as the nation's "Outstanding Online Program."
