Move slowly and fix things: A better way to combat social media posts that incite violence


Postdoctoral Researcher Laura Edelson and Associate Professor Damon McCoy, both co-directors of NYU Cybersecurity for Democracy, drew parallels between the 2023 Brazil election riots and the January 6, 2021 events at the U.S. Capitol, when their research revealed that tech companies failed to remove content that called for violence quickly enough to curb its spread. “We’re far past the point where we can trust social media platforms to police themselves. We need policymakers to create laws and regulations that make platforms accountable to the public,” said the duo in an op-ed.
