Manhattan Bridge Video Installation Celebrates NYC’s Diversity

Artist Carl Skelton [of NYU-Poly] has created a new temporary video installation which is projected on the colonnade of NYC’s Manhattan Bridge. The piece titled Ultratope 1: Real City pays tribute to everyday New Yorkers both past and present who’s diversity has helped define the character of the city.
Projected on the frieze of the Lower Manhattan side of the bridges entry are names, birth places and birthdays of people who have immigrated to the city. Skelton chose the Manhattan Bridge location because of its adjacency to the Lower East Side and Chinatown which throughout NYC’s history have served as first stops for newly arriving immigrants. Skelton updates the roster of names daily and is accepting name submissions of people both living or deceased to be included in the work. Ultratope 1: Real City is viewable from dusk to dawn every night through March 31st.
