Lack of insurance may have signaled Suffolk's vulnerability to cyberattack

Justin Cappos, associate professor and member of NYU Tandon's Center for Cybersecurity, commented on Suffolk County’s September 2022 ransomware attack, which might have been signaled in the months prior through insurance records. “If you want to insure a building, the building has to be up to code,” said Cappos, adding that the County’s supposed insurance “ineligibility” puzzled him: “It’s a little like saying, ‘No one would give me auto insurance,’ It would make one wonder, ‘Do you have a license? Do you have a history of car crashes?’”
