Expert says Times Square water main break is a further indication of NYC's aging infrastructure

The August 29, 2023 water main break in Times Square shone a spotlight on the country’s aging infrastructure and the stress it puts on cities like New York. “This is simply emblematic of a larger problem this country is facing with aging infrastructure," said Professor Debra Laefer. “This happens in big towns, in little towns, on the east coast, on the west coast. This country is over 200 years old, and cities like New York are over 300.” Laefer added that the 2021 federal infrastructure bill is a start to solving the problem.
