Cyber security teams hack their way to victory


When someone says 'hacking,' they usually aren't referring to a competitive sport. In recent weeks however, Stevens' students have participated in the Capture the Flag Application Security Challenge, hosted by NYU Poly.

The qualification round, happening September 24-26, put teams from various universities, consisting of up to four undergraduate students each, up against an array of tests, each requiring different levels of cyber security knowledge. Teams had forty-eight hours to work on a list of problems or puzzles, each with its own point value. Tasks such as extracting a key from a provided image file earned participants fewer points, while harder challenges earned them more. At the end of the weekend, teams with the highest score of completed tasks qualified for the next round.
