Constructing a new forum for industry
The IDC Innovation Hub hosts an inaugural event
On November 21, the IDC Innovation Hub held its inaugural forum, venturing from its home base at NYU Tandon to convene at the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) in Queens. The first-ever event attracted approximately 80 attendees from various circles, including architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firms; law practices; contractors; agencies; and many NYU students and faculty members.
Esteemed presenters included:
- Lorraine Grillo, President and CEO of the NYC School Construction Authority and Commissioner of the NYC Department of Design & Construction, who spoke of the need to work creatively within the industry and her appreciation of the goals of the IDC Innovation Hub.
- Howard Milstein, Chairman of the Milstein Organization and former Chairman of the New York State Thruway Authority, who focused on his tenure at the Thruway Authority during a time that the new Tappan Zee Bridge was first being discussed and the need for it to be completed through the design-build procurement method.
- Joey Larouche, CEO of Upbrella Construction, a firm that builds from a structure's roof down, who screened a fascinating video and discussed the distinct benefits of the innovative technique.
Also on hand was Dr. Michael Horodniceanu, Professor of Civil and Urban Engineering and Chair of the IDC Innovation Hub, who opened the program with a discussion on the need for innovation within the construction industry, especially in terms of new methods of building (such as that offered by Upbrella Construction) and procurement. Associate Director Judy Cooper closed the program with an informative discussion of the benefits of membership within the organization, which was founded in early 2019.
The Forum kicked off what is expected to be an enlightening series of industry events. Details will be forthcoming.
