Cleantech Leaders of New York: Top Ten


Cleantech is one of those words that traditionalists love to hate, and that self-described change advocates love to drop into conversation. Neither is entirely certain what it means, which is both the challenge and the promise of a sector that is just emerging into public consciousness and yet is rooted in long-standing practices of efficiency gains and more-effective energy use.

The concept is so poorly defined that the spellcheck on your computer, which recognizes all kinds of buzzwords most adults have never heard of, seems convinced the word is a mistake.

The challenge of defining cleantech would seem to make identifying leaders in the nascent industry an insurmountable challenge, and yet when Breaking Energy, in partnership with ESF as part of New York Energy Week asked for input from the New York energy community, names and nominations came flooding in.
