Avoiding data and algorithm biases through diversity
Research led by Rumi Chunara, professor of computer science and engineering at NYU Tandon, explores issues of ethics in AI, with a special focus on diversity of the computing community in relation to algorithmic fairness. The work, accepted to be presented at the Ethics of Data Science Conference in Sydney, Australia on March 25, 2020, spotlights the role of structural inequalities in society alongside the data used to train predictive models and in the design of objective functions.
