AT&T pays hacker to delete stolen customer data

AT&T reportedly paid hackers hundreds of thousands of dollars in ransom to delete the stolen customer data of over one hundred million customer accounts. According to Professor Justin Cappos, the original attack was sophisticated and enables hackers to commit other crimes. “This is a goldmine for attackers who want to commit identity theft. They can do all of the normal sorts of things like figure out what bank you’re using based on what number you get asked for authentication codes…from. That’s a very easy thing for them to do with data like this.”
