Kaan M.A. Ozbay, Professor in the Center for Urban Science and Progress at New York University is interviewed about traffic safety, costs and innovation.

Will new automation technologies like the self-driving car help reduce accidents and congestion?

Ozbay: They will have a positive impact on reducing accidents since around 90% of accidents today are due to human error. On the other hand, the effect of automation technologies on congestion can go both ways. They will save money by making traffic flow more uniform but in the long-run, self-driving vehicles might increase vehicle miles traveled by each vehicle.
