Abstract:
Colon cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in men under the age of 50, and the 2nd leading cause of cancer death in women under the age of 50. Every year over 50,000 patients die from colon cancer, and about 150,000 new cases are reported. This makes it the 3rd most prevalent form of cancer in the US. Colonoscopy is widely recognized as the most effective procedure for diagnosis and treatment. With almost 20,000,000 procedures per year, colonoscopy is one of the most frequently performed outpatient procedure. Looping during scope insertion causes patient pain and the need for sedation. Looping also results in longer and variable insertion times. Furthermore, repetitive biomechanical loads on endoscopists and nurses during insertion lead to a high prevalence of endoscopy-related injuries. Ergami Endoscopy is a medical device start-up company focusing on the development of automated insertion solutions for colonoscopes. Their design for a low-cost robotic device improves procedure productivity, reduces patient pain and need for sedation, and reduces endoscopy-related injuries in physicians and nurses.
Dr. Deo received his B.T. in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology – Mumbai and subsequently graduated from MIT with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. The next 7 years he spent at GE Global Research in Niskayuna, NY, in the Division of Research & Development. In his work, he focused on Focus on advanced turbo-machinery sealing applications with high-temperature, high-pressure, high-speed, and severe rotor transients geared towards application in aviation and energy production with oil and gas. In 2013, he accepted an offer from PENTAX Medical in Cambridge, MA, where he held positions as Senior Director of Technology Development, Director of Business Development, and Vice President for Strategy and Business Development. In 2022, he founded Ergami Endoscopy in Brooklyn (less than two miles from NYU Tandon) and assumed the position of CEO. NYU Tandon’s Future Labs supported Dr. Deo’s efforts through their catalyst seed-stage accele-rator program. Dr. Deo will talk about his experiences as a founder of a medical device company and his experience with NYU Tandon’s Future labs.
