""

The Center for Urban Science + Progress (CUSP) at NYU Tandon invites you to attend a lecture by Vivek Singh, associate professor in the School of Communication and Information and the director of the Behavioral Informatics Lab at Rutgers University, as part of the Fall 2024 CUSP Research Seminar Series. This event is open to the public with advance registration.

Lecture Title

Behavioral Data: A Torch, Magnifying Lens, and Mirror for Bias.

Lecture Abstract

This talk explores how behavioral data can serve as a “torch,” “magnifying lens,” and “mirror” to address societal and algorithmic biases. As a “torch,” data analytics shines light on existing societal inequities. As a “magnifying lens,” it allows close observation of third-party algorithms at an unprecedented scale and resolution. As a “mirror,” it facilitates self-reflection, evaluation, and sometimes, mitigation of bias in self-created algorithms. We will present case studies in applications such as privacy, ride-sharing, and mental health assessment, to illustrate the above roles (torch, magnifying glass, mirror) of behavioral data and analytics, and paint a vision for the next steps.

About the Speaker

Dr. Vivek Singh is the founding Director of the Behavioral Informatics Lab and an Associate Professor in the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers University. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine and received his post-doctoral training at MIT.  His work has appeared in leading disciplinary and interdisciplinary publication venues (e.g., Science, ACM Multimedia, ACM CHI) and has been covered by popular media (e.g., The New York Times, BBC, Wall Street Journal).  His work has received best paper awards from ASIS&T SIG-Social Media'22, IEEE Intelligent Systems'22, and ACM Web Science'24.
