The Cradle of Aviation Museum in Long Island houses an excellent collection of aircraft from the very beginning of aviation right up until the present. It includes an exhibit on the earliest attempts at fight and some experimental and recreational aircraft of the early Twentieth Century. The first World War and the critical inter-war years (as far as technological and economic innovations are concerned) are also represented. It also houses a excellent collection of single engine aircraft of WW II, both Naval and Army Air Corps. Finally, Cold War era jets and early rocketry, as well as some craft recently in service round out the collection. The museum puts particular emphasis on Long Island’s aviation industry, and houses one of the best collection of Grumman aircraft in existence. Although many of the exhibits are military, there is also an exhibit on the development of commercial aviation.
This special tour is offered as an accompaniment to the course HI 2213 History of Aviation and Aviation Technology. Although some of you may have visited the Museum already, this tour will cover information not included in the museum's exhibit text or signage.
The tour is open to the Polytechnic University community (students in the course have priority attendance, of course*) on a first-come, first-serve basis. Although the tour is free, those attending are responsible for admission requirements of the Museum.
