Abstract: It will be shown how problems in design of freeform lenses and mirrors can be rigorously formulated and investigated by methods originating in classical convexity.
These methods allow also to link such problems with fully nonlinear PDE's and optimal mass transport theory. They also motivate construction of algorithms for numerical solution of the design probems.
